I am loving Shay and Graham's podcast, too! Always so excited when I see a new episode!
As for phones, you know I'm happy to be the holdout family :) Our kids are 8, 5, and 2, so we're not there yet, but our current plan is to wait until 16ish (driving age) for a smartphone and 17ish for social media - or later. Things may have changed dramatically by the time our kids get there! (I hope they do!) Having likeminded friends is key for me feeling like this is possible, as well as rock-solid justification for our timing decisions based on evidence and research (that I'll be sharing with my kids along the way!).
Yes girl!! I'm so glad for you and your resources! I was just looking at my people finding you and was so pleasantly surprised to see how many embracing the idea too!
Late to this conversation but my kids won't be getting phones until they're old enough to pay the bill. That was my parents' rule 20 years ago, and once I got a job as a freshman, I got a phone and paid my bill every single month. It's sad to see second graders with phones. We know the truth of what it does, but to the kiddos, it seems so cool.
Side note, I laughed when you said you don't know how to put on eyeshadow 🤣 I have literally been saying that same thing forever! I don't have a clue and I probably never will 😂
I have three kids 11,10, and 8 who are just finishing 5th, 4th, and 2nd grade. We will be one of the weird ones - no smartphones for them for as long as possible! We are talking about getting a simple call/text phone for the kids when we leave them home alone for short periods of time since we do not have a house phone…
I loved reading this article. Thank you for the Dime suggestion. It's great to have a clean brand for facial products. And I also have no clue what I'm doing with makeup! Haha. My daughter has a Troomi phone which has different plans to purchase. She has a plan that allows for calls and texts, but no internet, social media, etc. Once she gets older and we feel she is ready, we can add certain apps to her phone to start using.
Such a fun read 😊 The Vacant Chair Principle is great & I definitely want to implement!
Thankfully my kids are not quite at the age of even having many peers with phones yet, but I know it’s coming. I would love to hold off on smartphones until teenage/high school years with boundaries and safeguards in place. Though I know in the next few years, I will need to look into the other gadgets that provide ways of communication for safety purposes as they start more activities, are away from me more, etc.
Yes! I have no clue on all those things. I remember some moms with older kids talking about 360. I had no idea. Like I don't even know what to safe guard once they have a phone.
Have you heard of Protect Young Eyes? It is a great resource to help you navigate the waters of all things digital with kids. Here is their website: https://protectyoungeyes.com

Ah Sara! What wise parents you had!
And yes! I'm not the only one. It feels like a youtube video should be able to teach me but maybe I just don't care enough to practice. ;)
